Dwight A. Owens, MD, FAPA, MCIME

Dwight Owens is a board-certified psychiatrist and neurologist, professor, and published author with numerous professional awards and twenty-five years of clinical and medical staff leadership experience in behavioral health services. In addition to running a successful psychiatry practice, Dr. Owens is a former Behavioral Health Surveyor for The Joint Commission.

Dr. Owens’ experience and career is multifaceted, having served in behavioral health and physician director positions for large and small organizations alike. His former positions include CL Psychiatrist at Navicent/Atrium Health, Competency and Services Director for the City of Atlanta, Attending Physicians and Service Director for Southern Crescent Pines Hospital, and Attending Physician for the Atlanta Medical Center. In his early career, Dr. Owens served in Staff Psychiatrist positions at West Fulton Mental Health Center, Fulton County Department, and Lee Arrendale State Prison.

Dr. Owens’ decorated career is elevated by his numerous awards and enduring experience in academia and scholarly research including numerous professional publications with media coverage. Dr. Owens is currently an Associate Professor at Mercer University School of Medicine, he is a Preceptor Nurse Practitioner at Walden University as well as a Preceptor Physician Assistant at Morehouse School of Medicine where he is also on the Advisory Board for Morehouse College Health Professions. Dr. Owens’ professional publications include contributions to a published article through the American Psychiatric Association, and his market available published books include “Depression in The Pews: A Silent Killer,” and “Am I in a Bad Relationship?” He is a recipient of the Kiplinger’s Who’s Who Award, the Cambridge Who’s Who Award, America’s Top Psychiatrist Award, and Patients’ Choice Award to name a few.

Dr. Owens completed his Forensic Fellowship in Psychiatry at Emory University in 1999, and he completed his residency training in Psychiatry at State University of New York Health Science Center in 1998 where he also worked as Chief Resident in HIV Psychiatric Service and in the Psychiatry Department. Prior to his Psychiatry training, Dr. Owens completed his medical degree at State University of New York Heath Science Center where he went on to complete a Family Practice Internship at Central Georgia Medical Center. He is an American Psychiatric Association Fellow, a certified American Society of Addiction Medicine DATA 2000 Waiver, and a Master Certified Independent Medical Examiner.
