Medical Staff Structure and Function

Nash Healthcare Consulting (NHC) offers on-site physician consulting to organizations that seek to optimize the structure and function of their medical staff. The self-governing organized medical staff has the non-delegable responsibility to credential and privilege its members, oversee quality of care, and assume a leadership role in performance improvement. The medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations provide the framework that governs these functions. Our experience tells us there is great variation in the degree that hospital medical staffs are actively involved in meeting these expectations, which is often evident by the lack of physician participation in the accreditation survey process.

Our consulting physicians will work with your organization’s medical staff leaders to identify areas in need of improvement. Prior to the engagement, we will review your bylaws, rules and regulations, as well as policies and data that will help focus on opportunities to work on-site with those individuals who can bring about the changes that are needed.

Each consultation is tailored to your facility’s needs. NHC offers one or two-day extension visits during your mock survey. We also offer stand-alone two-day focused visits. Remote follow-up support is offered following on-site consultations.

NHC’s physicians bring to the table the knowledge gained by years of clinical practice, administrative roles, and accreditation experience as surveyors and consultants. Our physicians relate to practicing providers on clinical issues as well as actively engage with administrators and governing body members. The hospital’s governing body is ultimately responsible for the delivery of care. Thus, your facility requires assurance that providers are properly credentialed and privileged, that ongoing competence is monitored and assured, that quality of care and patient safety have adequate oversight, and that continuous performance improvement is an ongoing priority. NHC’s physician consultants work strategically with medical staff leaders to ensure the self-governing medical staff is meeting its responsibilities.
