Michael “Mike” Funk, MA, BA, CHSP

Mike Funk brings 40 years of experience in Life Safety Code Engineering in healthcare facilities including Veteran Administration (VA) hospitals, Department of Defense (DOD) hospitals, critical access hospitals, ambulatory medical centers, and psychiatric hospitals.

Mike is a former Life Safety Code Surveyor for the Joint Commission where he conducted more than 250 Life Safety Code domestic and international surveys for eighteen years from 2004 until 2022. Mike is specialized in evaluating the effectiveness of an organization’s processes for 1) designing and maintaining buildings to requisite Life Safety Code Standards, 2) identifying and resolving Life Safety Code problems, and 3) determining the organization’s degree of compliance with relevant Life Safety Code requirements including occupancy requirements. Mike’s evaluation process further includes assessing facilities for compliance with Environment of Care Standards. Assessments include evaluating staff knowledge needed to prevent critical incidents, reviewing Environment of Care management plans, and assessing the organization’s degree of compliance with relevant emergency management standards.

In Mike’s early career, he served as Director of Facilities Engineering and Associate Administrator for Trinity Health Systems. In these roles, he was responsible for overall operations, maintenance, repair of facility systems, and structural and utility elements supervision. The scope of the role further included management of all building structures (interior and exterior), maintaining emergency power generators and systems, medical gas systems, vertical transport systems, HVAC, water and treatment systems, refrigeration systems, utility control systems, and life safety systems. 

Mike earned his Master of Healthcare Administration from the Joliet Illinois, and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Mount Saint Claire College. He is a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), and he is Yellow Belt Certified in Robust Process Improvement.
